How the conversion works
RGB adds red, green and blue light; CMYK subtracts light with cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink. The conversion first pulls out as much black (K) as possible, then expresses what's left as cyan, magenta and yellow. That's why grays convert to pure K.
Rich black and total ink
The naive formula prints rgb(0 0 0) as 100% K only. Printers often prefer a “rich black” such as 60/40/40/100 for large areas. Ask your printer about their total ink limit before adding ink manually.
Accepted input
Paste rgb(99 102 241), rgb(99, 102, 241) or a HEX code. Every other format updates live alongside the CMYK result.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the RGB to CMYK formula?
- Divide R, G and B by 255. K = 1 − max(R, G, B); C = (1 − R − K) / (1 − K), M = (1 − G − K) / (1 − K), Y = (1 − B − K) / (1 − K). Pure black gives 0, 0, 0, 100.
- Why do colors look duller after converting to CMYK?
- RGB screens can show far more saturated colors than ink on paper. Converting doesn't make a color duller, but printing it will if it sits outside the printer's gamut.
- Should I design in RGB or CMYK?
- Design in RGB for anything on screen. For print, convert late in the process using the profile your printer recommends, and use this calculator for quick estimates and specs.
