The HEX to CMYK formula

First read the HEX code as RGB and divide each channel by 255. The black key is K = 1 − max(R, G, B). Each ink is then C = (1 − R − K) / (1 − K), M = (1 − G − K) / (1 − K) and Y = (1 − B − K) / (1 − K). Multiply by 100 for the percentages print software expects.

Screen colors vs print colors

Screens add light, so their gamut includes saturated colors ink cannot reach. If a brand color looks dull in print, it is usually out of the CMYK gamut rather than converted wrongly. Pick a slightly less saturated color for print, or specify a spot ink.

When not to use CMYK

CMYK is only for print. On the web, keep HEX, RGB or oklch(): CSS has no CMYK color function that browsers support.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert HEX to CMYK?
Convert HEX to RGB, scale each channel to 0–1, then K = 1 − max(R, G, B) and C = (1 − R − K) / (1 − K), with the same formula for M (green) and Y (blue). #6366f1 becomes roughly 59% cyan, 58% magenta, 0% yellow and 5% black.
Will the printed color match my screen?
Not exactly. This is the standard device-independent formula; real presses use ICC profiles such as FOGRA39 or GRACoL, and many bright screen colors (vivid blues, greens and oranges) fall outside what CMYK ink can reproduce. Use the result as a starting point and proof with your printer.
Is CMYK the same as Pantone?
No. CMYK mixes four process inks, while Pantone (PMS) colors are pre-mixed spot inks matched from a licensed swatch book. Convert to CMYK for regular four-color printing; ask your printer when a brand requires a specific spot color.
