Adding transparency to a HEX color
Six-digit HEX has no transparency. To make it translucent, convert it to rgba() and choose an alpha, or append an alpha pair to make an eight-digit HEX: #6366f1 at 50% becomes #6366f180.
Common alpha pairs
100% = ff, 90% = e6, 80% = cc, 75% = bf, 50% = 80, 25% = 40, 10% = 1a, 0% = 00.

- Read the three HEX pairs as RGB, then add an alpha channel: #6366f1 at 80% opacity is rgba(99, 102, 241, 0.8). An eight-digit HEX already carries alpha in its last pair: #6366f1cc means alpha cc = 204 / 255 = 0.8.
- What is the alpha value in RGBA?
- Alpha is opacity from 0 (fully transparent) to 1 (fully opaque). rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5) is 50% black, a common overlay color.
- Is rgba() still valid CSS?
- Yes. Modern CSS also accepts rgb(99 102 241 / 0.8), which means the same thing. rgba() remains supported everywhere and is often easier to read in older codebases.
